Composite & timber decking in Ketton: what is involved
We build composite and timber decks on a properly braced frame: posts or pads set on firm ground, a treated or aluminium sub-frame at the right joist spacing for the boards, and a weed membrane and drainage underneath so the frame stays dry.
Ketton gave its name to Ketton stone, the cream oolitic limestone quarried beside the village, and its older streets are built of it, many under Collyweston slate. Around the historic core are later 20th-century houses and bungalows, and the cement works and quarry sit on the edge of the village.
We cover Ketton (PE9) and the villages around it, including Tinwell, Collyweston, Barrowden, Tixover, Aldgate and Geeston.
Ground and conservation in Ketton
Ketton is on the Lincolnshire Limestone, which usually drains well, but the River Chater runs through the village to meet the Welland, and ground close to the river is a different matter. We test before designing a soakaway. Limestone often sits close to the surface in Ketton, so post holes can hit rock; we break out to the right depth rather than setting posts short, and watch for old fill near the house.
Ketton has a conservation area covering the historic village but no Article 4 direction, so normal permitted development rules apply outside listed buildings, with the usual conservation area limits. Ketton stone frontages call for buff and natural tones rather than grey.

Permissions in Ketton
- PlanningDecking in a rear garden is normally permitted development if no part of it is more than 30cm above the ground and, with other outbuildings and platforms, it covers no more than half the garden. A raised deck over 30cm needs planning permission, and a listed house needs consent. Listed buildings and the Ketton conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed. Planning Portal: decking
- TreesTrees in a conservation area need six weeks' notice before work, and protected trees need consent; both are free. Rutland County Council: tree works
