What it is
A louvred pergola is a freestanding powder-coated aluminium frame with a roof of adjustable louvres. Turn them open for sun and air, or close them and the roof sheds rain into gutters built into the frame and down through the posts, so you can sit out in a shower.
Warm-white LED lighting runs round the frame as standard, the louvres can be manual or motorised, and it comes in black, anthracite, latte and light stone. Sizes run from 3m × 3m up to 8m × 3m.
Open or closed in
Leave all four sides open, or add what the spot needs: fixed or adjustable privacy louvres against a neighbour's window, drop-down blinds for low sun, frameless glass walls and sliding doors to make an outdoor room, or a hanging fire bowl for colder evenings.
Glass walls, doors and blinds need a level surface underneath, which is one more reason the base matters.
The base is the part that matters
Most pergola problems start underneath. A frame bolted to block paving, gravel, decking, tarmac or a thin slab can shift, and once it is out of square the louvres bind and the gutters stop draining.
Because we build patios and bases for a living, we check what yours is sitting on before anything is ordered. If it is up to it, we fix to it. If not, we put concrete pads under each post or build a new patio on a proper sub-base, and take the roof water to a drain, soakaway or border rather than across the paving.
Planning
A freestanding pergola in a rear garden is normally permitted development if it stays behind the front of the house, is no more than 2.5m high at the eaves and 2.5m overall within 2m of a boundary, is not on a platform more than 30cm high, and with any other outbuildings covers no more than half the garden.
In a conservation area it cannot go between the side of the house and the boundary, and a listed house needs planning permission. Stamford's Article 4 direction is aimed at work facing a road, footpath or open space. We check the height of the model you choose against these limits, and all of this, at the site visit.
