Driveways in Uppingham, built for a hilltop stone town

Uppingham packs a school founded in 1584, a market square and some of Rutland's best stone architecture onto one hilltop — which means tight lanes, stepped frontages and properties that deserve better than an off-the-shelf drive. We build resin, block, gravel and tarmac driveways across Uppingham and its villages.

Working on the hill

Uppingham's charm is also its challenge. The streets around the market place, High Street East and West and the school are narrow, sloped and busy in term time. Building a driveway here is as much logistics as craft: delivery timing, smaller machinery, traffic awareness and respect for neighbours a wall's-width away. We have done it enough times that it is routine.

Property-wise, the town centre's stone townhouses suit buff resin, bound gravel and natural block; the Victorian and twentieth-century homes along London Road, Leicester Road and Stockerston Road bring more conventional frontages where widening for two cars is the usual brief; and the surrounding villages — Lyddington, Bisbrooke, Preston, Wing, Glaston, Seaton — add long rural drives where machine-laid tarmac with stone edging earns its keep.

  • Slope-savvy design: falls, steps and thresholds worked out before anything is dug
  • Permeable surfacing as standard, keeping planning out of the picture for most jobs
  • Conservation-aware material choices for the town centre's stone setting
  • Dropped kerb applications handled where new access is needed

Villages we serve around Uppingham

Patios and gardens in Uppingham too

Driveways may bring us to Uppingham, but half our work here is behind the house: porcelain terraces with views over the Welland valley, sleeper terracing on the slopes, and complete garden rebuilds. See our Uppingham porcelain patio project for a recent example.

Can you get machinery into tight Uppingham frontages?

Almost always — micro diggers, conveyors and hand work where needed. We survey access at the first visit and the method is priced in, never a surprise extra.

Do conservation rules affect driveways in Uppingham?

For most owner-occupied drives, sympathetic and permeable means no application needed. Listed properties around the centre need a closer look, which we do before you spend anything.

Do you really cover the villages?

The villages are half the point of being based in Rutland — Lyddington to Wing is our daily round.
