What is included in the price

For a built-in fire pit, the guide covers setting it into the patio or lawn on a proper base, building the stone or brick surround, and lining the bowl so the heat does not damage the walling. We position it clear of fences, trees and buildings as part of the design.

With seating, the price adds benches built on footings and faced to match the pit. A sunken area adds the excavation, retaining walls with drainage behind them, and a drain or soakaway at the low point, which is why it is priced individually.

What a built-in fire pit costs

What makes it cost more or less

  • Stone, brick or rendered facings, and how much cutting the design needs
  • A round or square pit, and how wide it is
  • Wood-burning or gas, as a gas pit needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • The length and height of any benches
  • How deep a sunken area goes and how much soil has to leave site
  • The ground type, which sets the drainage needed at the low point
  • Access for a small digger and skip to the back garden

Sunken seating is where local ground matters most. On the Vale of Catmose clay around Oakham, Langham and Whissendine, a dug-out area will gather water unless the drain at the bottom has somewhere to go, so that part of the job grows. Stamford, Ketton and Greetham sit on limestone that usually drains well, which can make a soakaway simpler, though ground near the Chater at Ketton is wetter. Around Corby and Weldon, ground can turn from ironstone to clay or old fill partway across a garden, so we dig a test hole before pricing the walls and drainage.

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest built-in fire pit?
A simple round stone or brick pit set into an existing patio sits towards the lower end of the £1,200–£2,000 range. Leaving out built-in seating and using garden chairs keeps it there; benches and sunken areas are what move the cost up.
Is a sunken seating area worth it over a simple fire pit?
It gives a sheltered, enclosed space that feels like an outdoor room, and it suits sloping gardens well. It costs more because of the digging, walls and drainage, so on a flat garden with a tight budget a fire pit with built-in seating often gives most of the effect.
What upkeep does a fire pit need?
A wood pit needs the ash clearing out and the bowl checking for loose or cracked lining from time to time. In a sunken area, keep the drain at the bottom clear, especially before winter. A gas pit should be checked by a Gas Safe engineer.
When is payment due?
Payment stages are set out in the written quote with the fixed price, so you know what is due and when before you agree. Where a fire pit is part of a bigger garden build, it sits within the same quote and schedule.
How long will the quoted price last?
The written quote shows how long it is valid. If you would rather wait for a later season, tell us and we will recheck material costs and confirm the price again before booking.
