What a permeable driveway costs

What is included in the price

The rates are all-in: digging out, an open-graded sub-base sized for your ground and the rainfall, the bedding layer and the surface itself, whether that is resin bound, permeable block or stabilised gravel.

Where the ground will not take water, the build-up is lined and fitted with a controlled outlet so water is held and released slowly. That extra work is quoted separately once we know what the ground is doing.

What a permeable driveway costs

What makes it cost more or less

  • Finish: stabilised gravel is the lowest cost, resin bound and permeable block sit higher.
  • How well the ground drains, and whether a lined system is needed.
  • Depth of dig and how much spoil has to go away.
  • Edging, borders and the shape of the drive.
  • Levels and falls, including steps up to the front door or garage.
  • Lifting an existing drive and disposing of it.
  • Access for plant and deliveries.
What a permeable driveway costs

Permeable driveway costs in Rutland, Stamford and the nearby towns

This is where local ground changes the price most. Oakham sits on Vale of Catmose clay and is named in Rutland's flood strategy as a surface water risk area, so lined systems are more likely there. Market Harborough's mudstones drain slowly and the town centre flooded in September 2024. Stamford's limestone usually takes water well, which keeps costs nearer the lower end, but its conservation area has an Article 4 direction covering hard surfaces, so front drives there usually need permission. Corby and Kettering ground varies plot by plot, so we test before pricing.

What to check in any quote

  • That the sub-base is described as open-graded, not a standard compacted type.
  • Whether a percolation or test hole has been dug, and what it showed.
  • If the ground is clay, whether a lined system with an outlet is included.
  • The depth of the build-up for each layer.
  • Edging, drainage details and disposal of the old drive.

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest permeable driveway?
Stabilised gravel, at about £60–£100 per m² all in, against £140–£210 for permeable block and £150–£220 for resin bound. It still needs the right open-graded base underneath to stay permeable, so the saving comes from the surface, not from cutting the build-up.
Is a permeable driveway worth it over a standard one?
Often it is the simpler route. A permeable front drive needs no planning permission, while more than 5m² of impermeable surface draining onto the road does. It also avoids adding channel drains to carry water off the surface.
What will a permeable drive cost to maintain?
Mainly your time. Regular sweeping keeps leaves and silt out of the pores and joints, and an occasional jet wash restores the flow. Permeable block may need joint material topping up over time. Stabilised gravel can need raking to keep it even.
How do payments work on a driveway job?
Any deposit and the payment stages are written into your quote, so you know before you agree. Nothing is due until you have accepted, and bank details are sent with the invoice, not printed on the quote.
How long is a driveway quote valid?
The quote shows how long its price stands. Aggregate, resin and block prices change through the year, so if you accept after that date we check the figures again before booking you in. The guide rates on this page are for budgeting only.
