Turfing & planting
New turf fails on compacted subsoil, which is what most new-build gardens have.
New turf fails on compacted subsoil, which is what most new-build gardens have. Proper preparation means breaking up the compacted layer, importing screened topsoil to a real depth and laying turf the day it arrives; autumn and spring are the best times, and new turf needs daily watering for about three weeks.

Lawns that last
We break up compacted ground, take out rubble, import screened topsoil, level and firm it, and lay turf the day it is cut. On heavy clay we work in grit or sand where drainage needs help.
Planting for the soil
Rutland has free-draining limestone soils in the east and heavy clay in the west, and planting that thrives on one struggles on the other. We plant for the soil, the aspect and how much looking-after you want to do.
The kind of finish we build

“Really pleased with my new driveway. Beautifully finished, friendly professional workmen, would definitely recommend and will be using them again for the garden once other renovations complete.”
