What is included in the price

For closeboard, the per-metre rate covers concrete posts set in concrete, gravel boards so the timber never touches the soil, rails and featheredge boards. For slatted fencing it covers aluminium posts set in concrete and the composite or aluminium slatted infill.

Matching gates, privacy screens and LED-lit capping can be added, and each is shown as its own line on the quote. Clearing away the old fence is assessed on the visit because it depends on what is there and how it was put in.

What a new fence costs per metre

What makes it cost more or less

  • Material: closeboard timber is the best value, slatted composite and aluminium cost more.
  • Height of the fence along each section.
  • Slopes, where panels have to be stepped or raked to follow the ground.
  • Hard ground, old concrete or tree roots where posts go in.
  • Removing and disposing of the old fence and posts.
  • Gates, screens and lit capping added to the run.
  • Access along the boundary, especially where it is shared with a neighbour.

Fencing costs in Rutland, Stamford and the nearby towns

Post holes tell us a lot. On the clay around Oakham, Langham and Market Harborough, ground holds water and moves with the seasons, so posts need proper depth and concrete. Corby's restored quarry land and Kettering's new-build plots can hide fill and compacted subsoil, which changes how holes are dug. Planning is the other local factor: Stamford's conservation area has an Article 4 direction covering fences that face a road or open space, and Langham has one too, so front boundaries there usually need permission before any price is final.

What to check in any quote

  • Post type and how deep and how they are set.
  • Whether gravel boards are included under timber panels.
  • The height of each section and that it stays within the 2m limit, or 1m next to a road.
  • Whether removal of the old fence and waste is in the price.
  • What the boundary line is and that both sides agree on it.

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest fence that will last?
Closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards, at £80–£100 per metre fitted. The concrete posts and gravel boards keep the timber out of the wet ground, which is where cheaper fences usually fail first, so it is the best balance of price and life.
Is composite or aluminium fencing worth paying more for?
If you want a fence that never needs painting and keeps its colour, it can be. It starts from about £240 per metre against £80–£100 for closeboard, so it suits shorter runs, front boundaries and garden rooms where looks matter most.
What does a fence cost to look after?
Timber closeboard benefits from a coat of preservative or stain every so often and a check that boards are fixed. Composite and aluminium need only a wash. Keeping soil and plants off the gravel boards helps any fence last longer.
How are fencing jobs paid for?
Your quote sets out any deposit and when the balance is due. You are not asked to pay anything until you have accepted it, and payment details come with the invoice after acceptance rather than on the quote.
How long will my fencing price be held?
Each quote shows the date it is valid until. Timber prices in particular can move, so if you accept after that date we recheck the figures before confirming a start.
