A path, step and border lighting scheme typically costs up to about £1,500 installed. A full multi-zone garden scheme, lighting trees, walls, seating and paths with separate control, is usually £2,000–£6,000 or more. A new outdoor mains circuit is priced separately, because it is notifiable work that must be certified. We give the fixed price in writing after designing the scheme on site.

What is included in the price

The guide covers designing the scheme with you, supplying the low-voltage fittings, laying the cable in ducts, fitting transformers and controls, and setting the lights at dusk so they sit right. Timers, sensors or app control can be built in.

Where a patio or path is being built at the same time, ducts go in under the paving so no cable ever lies beneath slabs. A new outdoor mains circuit is quoted on its own line and certified.

What garden lighting costs to install

What makes it cost more or less

  • How many fittings, and how many separately controlled zones
  • Lights recessed into paving, which can mean lifting slabs on an existing patio
  • Whether ducts can go in during a patio build or have to be added afterwards
  • The control type: a simple timer, sensors or app
  • The distance from the house to the furthest zone
  • Whether a new outdoor circuit is needed

Garden lighting costs in Rutland and the surrounding towns

Lighting is one of the few garden jobs where layout matters more than ground, but the ground still counts. On the heavy clay around Oakham and Market Harborough, ducts are laid with the falls and drainage so they do not turn into channels for water. Around Rutland Water at Edith Weston and Empingham, schemes are often designed around views and open country, where keeping lights angled down and away from neighbours matters even more. In Stamford's conservation area and on its many listed buildings, small, discreet fittings sit better against stone walls than bright floodlights.

What to check in any quote

  • Low-voltage fittings, and where each one goes
  • Cable run in ducts, not loose under paving or turf
  • An electrical certificate for any new outdoor circuit
  • Which controls are included and how they are set
  • Lights aimed down and away from neighbouring windows

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest way to light a garden?
Lighting the steps, the main path and one border, at up to about £1,500, gives the safety benefit and most of the atmosphere. Wall and planting lights that do not need slabs lifting keep the cost lower in an existing garden.
Is garden lighting worth it?
It makes steps and paths safer after dark and lets you use the patio into the evening. In winter it means you still see the garden from indoors. A few well-placed lights usually look better than a lot of brighter ones.
What does garden lighting cost to run?
Low-voltage LED fittings use little electricity, and a timer or dusk sensor stops them burning all night. Upkeep is mostly cleaning lenses and trimming plants that grow over the fittings.
When do I pay for a lighting scheme?
Payment stages are written into the quote with the fixed price. If lighting is going in alongside a patio, the two are usually quoted and scheduled together so the ducts go in at the right point.
How long is a garden lighting quote valid?
The written quote states its validity. If you decide to add lighting later, we recheck the fittings and the design against the garden as it is then, and confirm the price in writing before booking.
