Garden lighting in Ketton

Garden lighting in Ketton: what is involved

We design and install low-voltage garden lighting: step and riser lights, uplighters on trees and walls, and soft light around seating, with the ducts laid as the patio is built and the electrics certified.

Ketton gave its name to Ketton stone, the cream oolitic limestone quarried beside the village, and its older streets are built of it, many under Collyweston slate. Around the historic core are later 20th-century houses and bungalows, and the cement works and quarry sit on the edge of the village.

We cover Ketton (PE9) and the villages around it, including Tinwell, Collyweston, Barrowden, Tixover, Aldgate and Geeston.

Ground and conservation in Ketton

Ketton is on the Lincolnshire Limestone, which usually drains well, but the River Chater runs through the village to meet the Welland, and ground close to the river is a different matter. We test before designing a soakaway. Cables run in ducts laid below the paving and planting, so we bring the lighting in as the patio or garden is built in Ketton wherever we can.

Ketton has a conservation area covering the historic village but no Article 4 direction, so normal permitted development rules apply outside listed buildings, with the usual conservation area limits. Ketton stone frontages call for buff and natural tones rather than grey.

Questions

Garden lighting in Ketton: questions

How much does a garden lighting scheme cost in Ketton?
A path, step and border lighting scheme typically costs up to about £1,500 installed, and a full multi-zone garden scheme £2,000–£6,000 or more. A new outdoor circuit is priced separately. Your fixed price comes in writing after the site visit.
Do I need planning permission for a garden lighting scheme in Ketton?
Garden lighting does not need planning permission, but a new outdoor mains circuit is notifiable electrical work, so it is done and certified by a registered electrician. Keep lights pointing down and away from neighbours' windows. Listed buildings and the Ketton conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed.
Does the ground in Ketton make a difference?
Cables run in ducts laid below the paving and planting, so we bring the lighting in as the patio or garden is built in Ketton wherever we can.
Can you light an existing garden?
Yes. Walls, beds and steps can be lit without lifting paving; lights set into the paving itself usually mean lifting slabs.
Is low voltage bright enough?
Yes. Modern LED fittings give plenty of light, and a few well-placed lights look better than floodlighting.
