For a permanent concrete ramp with handrails and a non-slip surface, budget up to about £2,500. Longer ramps, extra level landings and widened paths are priced on the visit, because the length and rise vary so much between homes. Where a Disabled Facilities Grant is paying, the work is priced to the council's schedule. We confirm a fixed price in writing after measuring the route.

What a permanent access ramp costs

What is included in the price

For a standard ramp, the guide covers digging out and forming a concrete ramp at a gentle gradient, level landings at the top and bottom, handrails where they are needed, and a non-slip finish that sheds water.

We set out the gradient and landings to Approved Document M and to suit the person who will use the ramp. On grant-funded work, the specification follows the occupational therapist's recommendations.

What a permanent access ramp costs

What makes it cost more or less

  • The height up to the door, which sets how long the ramp must be
  • The number of landings and any turns
  • Handrails on one side or both
  • Widening or rebuilding the path to the gate or drive
  • Raised ramps or platforms more than 30cm high, which can need planning
  • Ground conditions and drainage at the foot of the ramp
  • Taking out existing steps or paving

Access ramp costs across Rutland and nearby towns

A ramp has to stay dry and non-slip, so local ground and water count. In Oakham and Market Harborough, slow-draining clay means the foot of a ramp needs a planned route for water rather than leaving a puddle by the door. Uppingham's hilltop streets and sloping plots can call for a longer ramp or extra landings to reach the door at a gentle gradient. In Stamford and the other conservation areas, a ramp to the front of an older stone house is designed to sit quietly beside it, and any raised platform is checked with the council first.

What to check in any quote

  • The gradient, and the length and position of each landing
  • Handrail height, sides and fixings
  • The non-slip finish and how it drains
  • That the design follows the OT's recommendations on grant work
  • Whether planning has been checked for any raised section

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest way to get level access?
A short concrete ramp with handrails, up to about £2,500, is the simplest permanent option. If the rise is small, reshaping the existing path to a gentle slope may avoid a separate ramp, which we can assess on the visit.
Is a permanent ramp better than a temporary one?
A permanent concrete ramp is built on a proper base, drains properly and has fixed handrails, so it stays safe for years. A temporary ramp suits short-term needs, such as recovery after an operation, but it can move and get slippery.
Does a concrete ramp need maintenance?
Very little. Keep the surface clear of moss, leaves and ice in winter, check the handrail fixings now and then, and keep the drainage at the bottom clear so water does not sit at the door.
How does payment work with a Disabled Facilities Grant?
Grant-funded work is priced to the council's schedule, and payment follows the council's process once the grant is approved. For privately funded ramps, the payment terms are set out in the written quote.
How long is a ramp quote valid?
The written quote shows how long the price holds. Grant applications can take time, so if approval comes after that date we recheck material costs and confirm the price in writing before starting work.
