Supplied and fitted, a new automated sliding gate is typically £5,000–£10,000, while automated swing gates usually come to £4,000–£8,000. If your gates are sound and you only want them motorised, automating existing gates is usually £1,500–£3,000. In every case the power supply to the gate is priced on top. These are guide figures; we confirm a fixed price in writing after the visit.

What is included in the price

For new gates, the guide covers the gate or gates in aluminium or composite, the posts and concrete foundations sized for the weight and the motor, the automation, and your choice of keypad, intercom or remote fobs.

Safety devices come with every automated gate we fit: safety edges or photocells, then a force test once installed, so the gate stops and reverses if anything is in its path. The cable run from the house is quoted separately because its length and route vary from one property to the next.

What electric driveway gates cost

What makes it cost more or less

  • Gate width and height, and whether it is one leaf or two
  • Sliding or swing, and whether the drive slopes up from the road
  • Aluminium or composite, and how detailed the design is
  • Access control: keypad, intercom, fobs or app
  • The distance from the house for the power supply
  • Whether existing posts can carry a motor or need replacing
  • Planning needs in a conservation area or on a listed house

Gate costs in Stamford, Rutland and North Northamptonshire

Planning is the local factor that changes gate jobs most. Stamford's Article 4 direction, in force across its conservation area since December 2018, removes permitted development for gates facing a road, so most front gates there need an application, and the council's appraisal favours traditional materials. Langham and several villages near Uppingham, including Lyddington, Seaton and Belton-in-Rutland, have Article 4 directions too. Corby's only Article 4 direction concerns houses in multiple occupation, while Kettering's are street-specific, so we check your address. Ground matters for the posts as well: on Oakham's clay, foundations are dug with standing winter water in mind.

What electric driveway gates cost

What to check in any quote

  • Safety edges or photocells, and a recorded force test after fitting
  • Foundation depth for the posts and the motor
  • Whether the power supply is included or listed separately
  • That the gates open inwards, never over the footway or road
  • Which access controls, and how many fobs, are included
  • Whether planning has been checked for your address

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest way to get electric gates?
If your existing gates and posts are in good condition, adding automation is the lowest-cost route, usually £1,500–£3,000 plus the power supply. For new gates, automated swing gates at £4,000–£8,000 generally come in below a sliding gate at £5,000–£10,000.
Are electric gates worth it?
They add security, keep children and dogs in, and save getting out of the car in the rain. Whether that justifies the outlay depends on how often you use the drive and how exposed the front of the house is; we will tell you honestly if a simpler gate would do.
What running costs do electric gates have?
The electricity used is small. The main ongoing cost is servicing: motors, safety edges and photocells should be checked regularly so the gate keeps stopping and reversing as it should. Keeping the track or hinge area clear of leaves and gravel helps too.
How are payments arranged?
Payment stages are set out in the written quote alongside the fixed price, so they are agreed before any gates are ordered or made. The guide figures on this page are there for budgeting only.
How long is a gate quote valid?
The validity period is printed on the written quote. Gate and motor prices can change, so if you come back after that date we recheck them and confirm the price in writing before booking.
