Outdoor kitchens in Ketton: what is involved

We build outdoor kitchens on a proper base: block or stone-faced counters with weatherproof worktops, space for a grill, pizza oven, sink and fridge, and the gas, power and water brought out safely.

Ketton gave its name to Ketton stone, the cream oolitic limestone quarried beside the village, and its older streets are built of it, many under Collyweston slate. Around the historic core are later 20th-century houses and bungalows, and the cement works and quarry sit on the edge of the village.

We cover Ketton (PE9) and the villages around it, including Tinwell, Collyweston, Barrowden, Tixover, Aldgate and Geeston.

Ground and conservation in Ketton

Ketton is on the Lincolnshire Limestone, which usually drains well, but the River Chater runs through the village to meet the Welland, and ground close to the river is a different matter. We test before designing a soakaway. We dig the base below the topsoil in Ketton and lay it on a compacted sub-base, so it stays level.

Ketton has a conservation area covering the historic village but no Article 4 direction, so normal permitted development rules apply outside listed buildings, with the usual conservation area limits. Ketton stone frontages call for buff and natural tones rather than grey.

Permissions in Ketton

  1. PlanningAn outdoor kitchen in a rear garden does not normally need planning permission. A roof or pergola over it has to meet the outbuilding height and size limits. Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe engineer, and new outdoor circuits are notifiable electrical work. Listed buildings and the Ketton conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed. Planning Portal: outbuildings
  2. TreesTrees in a conservation area need six weeks' notice before work, and protected trees need consent; both are free. Rutland County Council: tree works

Questions

Outdoor kitchens in Ketton: questions

How much does a outdoor kitchen cost in Ketton?
A built-in outdoor kitchen with cabinets, worktop and space for appliances starts from about £6,000. A fully equipped kitchen with a grill, pizza oven, sink and fridge is typically £8,000–£20,000. Gas, power and water connections are priced on top. Your fixed price comes in writing after the site visit.
Do I need planning permission for a outdoor kitchen in Ketton?
An outdoor kitchen in a rear garden does not normally need planning permission. A roof or pergola over it has to meet the outbuilding height and size limits. Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe engineer, and new outdoor circuits are notifiable electrical work. Listed buildings and the Ketton conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed.
Does the ground in Ketton make a difference?
We dig the base below the topsoil in Ketton and lay it on a compacted sub-base, so it stays level.
Can an outdoor kitchen go under a pergola?
Yes, and it is the best way to use one in British weather. Grills need clearance and ventilation, so we plan the layout with the pergola.
Do I need gas?
No. Many grills and pizza ovens run on bottled gas, charcoal or wood. A fixed gas supply is neater but must be fitted by a Gas Safe engineer.
