The brief
Most of this back garden in Oakham is block paved, which keeps it practical but left nowhere that felt like a place to sit. The patio needed to look like a space of its own, not just another hard surface.
What we built
The patio is laid in buff riven-effect slabs, which give the texture of split stone with a very even colour and at a lower cost than natural stone. The joints are tight and consistent, which matters on a slab this uniform because any wander in the lines shows.
The front edge sweeps round in a curve to soften the corner and follow the line of the block paving, and a band of plum chippings separates the two surfaces. The contrast frames the patio, and the chippings avoid a hard cut joint between slab and block.
