The brief
Like a lot of newer townhouses around Oakham, this one had a single drive in front of the garage and a strip of planting and bare ground beside it, in front of the door. The owners wanted a second off-road space without giving the whole front of the house over to more tarmac.
What we built
The area was dug out and rebuilt as block paving: buff blocks in herringbone, with a charcoal double border on all sides and a concrete edge restraint against the planting. The contrast border is what makes it read as a deliberate approach to the front door rather than a patch added next to the drive.
An inspection chamber sits right in the middle of the new space. Rather than leave a steel lid in the paving, it now has a recessed tray cover filled with matching block, so access is kept but the cover all but disappears. A slim channel drain runs across the front of the house so rain off the new paving is kept away from the door.
