The brief
This house in Oakham had a tarmac drive in front of the garage and a strip of lawn in front of the house. The owners needed room for another car, and wanted the extra space to look like part of the front garden rather than more of the same surface.
What we built
The lawn came up and a new parking bay went in alongside the tarmac in red-brindle block laid in herringbone. Where block meets tarmac, a soldier course in a contrasting brindle sweeps round in a curve to follow the line of the drive, and the two surfaces finish flush along the whole joint, so there is no lip to catch a wheel or a foot.
A steel-grated channel drain runs across the garage front, catching water off the drive before it reaches the garage door. A curved edge takes more cutting than a straight one, but it is what stops a widening looking like a widening.
