The garden
This garden in Weldon is laid out on two levels, with stone retaining walls holding the upper beds and a lawn running down the middle. The far corner, boxed in by the walls, was the obvious place for a sitting area but had never been used as one.
What we built
The patio is multi-tone Indian sandstone in mixed sizes, laid in a random pattern with the slabs chosen as they went down so the greens, buffs and plum tones spread evenly across the area instead of clumping together.
It sits a step above the lawn, and the front edge sweeps round in a curve faced in walling stone to match the walls behind, with a buff block step down to the grass. Between the paving and the base of the walls, a strip of rounded pebbles gives rain somewhere to go, keeps splash-back off the stone, and saves cutting every slab tight to a wall line that is never quite straight.
